Your Lungs Are On Fire

By Char Shields - August 27, 2019

Your lungs are burning inside your chest causing extricating and unimaginable pain. It begins to spread throughout your body, taking every organ, limb and blood cell with it. Do you sit back and do nothing, or do you ask for help? Hopefully, you'll do the latter.

The Amazon Rainforest (aka the 'Earth's lungs') is on fire. That's not news, it's all over social media.

However, the common thing I seem to be seeing on Twitter is: "Well, there's nothing I can do about it."

It's not good enough.

When Notre Dame was on fire, everyone was in uproar. Social media feeds were flooded with sad tweets, the news covered every second of the event and billionaires were throwing their money at an already wealthy church/tourist attraction. No lives were lost and it can easily be rebuilt.

Our literal lungs are on fire, and they cannot easily be rebuilt. Thousands of animal's and indigenous people's lives are in danger. Species of plants are being wiped off the face of the planet. And all you can say is "great, we know, but what can we do about it?"

I'll tell you exactly what you can do about it.

Raising awareness is only the first step, not the last. Here's a list of things you can do to help the planet and the forest:

  • Download 'Ecosia' on your phone - a search engine that plants a tree for every 45 of your searches. Or you can go to Ecosia.org.
  • Many forest fires are started to make room for farming space for the meat industry. Look to moving towards a vegetarian or vegan diet or at least reduce your meat consumption. Try Meatless Mondays and then work in more meat-free days. Every little thing helps.
  • Walk more instead of driving or using public transport. This is not only good for your health, but the planet's too.
  • Check with Rainforest Alliance that the paper and wood products you're buying are safe for the rainforest.
  • Contact and put pressure on your local politicians. Let them know that you want them to consider this as an international emergency that deserves a lot of investment and care.
  • Open up to the idea of socialism. Now don't throw your shoe at your screen if you're completely against it, just hear me out. Corporate capitalism is the number one killer of our planet. Start turning your back against it. Vote for politicians you trust to push capitalism aside and focus on repairing the damage we've done to this planet.
  • Coming off my last point, give less money to fast fashion. They dump so much waste as they create clothes only built for one or two uses. Instead, shop at charity and thrift stores. You wouldn't believe the amazing stuff you can find in there as well as some great bargains.
If you are able to, you can also donate to:

One day, the Earth will wipe away humankind and nature will take back its rightful ownership. But for now, how about we stop messing it about? Because the planet might be able to recover from the effects of climate change.

But we won't.
