4 Common Lies About Jeremy Corbyn Debunked

By Char Shields - August 15, 2019

Surprisingly, even after everything the Conservatives have done to this country, a lot of people still want to vote for them. The depressing fact is that a lot of these are members of the working and middle class.

If you're a hard-core politics nerd like me, then you've probably got into your fair share of arguments on Facebook and Twitter. Or, you've at least seen them. I know I have. In fact, I'm kind of known for my heated Facebook debates.

One thing I've learnt through these are that the common reasoning behind voting Tory from a working-class position is: "at least it ain't Jeremy Corbyn", which is something I struggle to get my head around.

In what planet is a racist, sexist, homophobic buffoon like Boris Johnson better than Corbyn?

Of course, the majority of the time it's simply what the media have led them to believe. A lot of people are simply misinformed - and that doesn't make them bad people. At some point, we've all thought that if something was said on the news, then it must be true. However, as we learn that the Tories and the elite control the majority of the media, we start to question it.

In this post, I'm going to go through some lies (and there's a lot) that have been told about Corbyn in an attempt to steer you away from voting for someone who will actually benefit your quality of life, rather than making you hand over your hard-earned wages to the richest 1% of the country.

1. "He's the same as the rest of the politicians, he can't be trusted!"

He's not. I mean, just look at his track record...

Corbyn has fought against the Tories for years, including the likes of Margaret Thatcher. At times, he even went against the Labour Government. For example, he voted against introducing tuition fees in 1997, and he supported the miner's strike. He continues to take the Tories down during PMQs (Prime Minister's Questions) and has spoken, on average, in more debates than other MPs.

Further proving that he's always been on the right side of history, in 1984 he was arrested for protesting Apartheid outside of the South African embassy.

He's consistently opposed austerity, which has almost doubled the UK's debt and cost us our AAA credit rating for the first time since late 1970's.

2. "There's not enough money for his ideas. He's just bribing his supporters with free stuff."

The Labour manifesto is incredibly well-thought out and fully costed. See for yourself: https://labour.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/labour-manifesto-2017.pdf

Corbyn has no intention of raising taxes for the working or middle classes. Instead, he wants the richest 5% to finally pay their fair-share.

The Tories love to blame immigrants and benefit claimers for the money we lose, when in fact we're losing billions of pounds due to tax evasion. Roughly, we're losing £673 million because of big corporations such as Google, Starbucks and Facebook. HMRC pretend that this isn't the case and that they're successfully reducing this. However, they don't account for the strategies these companies use.

3. "He's a terrorist sympathiser."

This is an extremely dangerous lie.

Instead of increasing the violence, he invited members of the IRA for peaceful conversations. He stated that 'talks are the way to peace, not war'. Which is completely true. As they say, 'Bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity.'

These talks were essential to securing the Good Friday Agreement... but the smear campaigns against him fight to ignore this fact. This was clear to see when I was conducting research for this post - it's near-impossible to find anything positive about him because the media are so biased against him.

However, Corbyn was awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2013.

4. "He's unelectable. Most of his party want him to stand down."

Corbyn has been the MP for Islington North since 1983. In 2015, Corbyn won the party leadership vote by a landslide. He secured 59.5% of the vote whilst his leading opponent, Andy Burnham, only received 19%. In 2017, he increased his percentage and hung parliament in the snap general election, gaining 30 seats for Labour.

Centre-left Labour members (aka Blairites) don't want him as a leader because they appear to lean more towards the right and as far away from socialism, and "traditional" Labour as possible. They can't seem to except that New Labour is and was a sham, and no one wants to be put through it again.

I can understand how it's easy to believe all these lies: they're everywhere. But the media is run by the rich elite (most, if not all, of which are Tory party members) and Corbyn threatens the power they have over us... of course they won't say anything nice about him.

Instead of listening to the 1% of the country who own literally everything... listen to Corbyn himself. Without this made-up idea in your head. Listen to the care and passion in his speeches, and his track record. It doesn't take long, I've just done most of the work for you.

If after reading this, you still want to vote Tory and/or mindlessly hate Corbyn, then go ahead and shoot yourself in the foot. But please try to remember that you're also shooting the sick, the poor, the elderly, the planet, your children and your grand-children directly in the head.

And, dear reader, I would literally get down on my knees and beg if I could: please stop letting the news decide what you should think - they're just scared.

The Tories should be scared... empires always fall.
