How Fashion Can Boost Self-Confidence

By Char Shields - July 21, 2017

Since January 2017, I have lost almost 2 stone in weight. However, I have still been feeling very low about my body. Even though I have worked hard on losing weight, I still always put myself down, when I should be giving myself some credit.

I've been finding getting ready in the morning very difficult. I'd spend time doing my makeup but felt like it never looked good enough. I'd get dressed, look in the mirror and call myself fat and ugly. Every day I'd breakdown over the way I look. I found myself throwing most of my clothes away because I didn't like the way I looked in them.

So, I decided that I needed a shopping spree.

Having the right outfit and your own sense of style that makes you feel good can really help boost your confidence. I wanted to change up my wardrobe and find clothes that make me feel better about myself.

A few days ago, my boyfriend went to Plymouth to get more of his tattoo done. So, I decided to go with him and do some shopping whilst I waited.

It was a cold, stormy day. I was wearing minimal makeup, baggy leggings, a crop top and a black hoodie and was feeling pretty down about myself. But I was ready to take on the shops.

Shirt, New Look.

The first shop I went into was New Look and I instantly fell in love with this shirt. This made me feel really good about myself because it wasn't tight so it doesn't make you feel self-conscious, but it was still very flattering. It was very comfy so you could wear it casually, but you could also dress it up. I loved the cute flowers on it and the bows at the end of the sleeves which gave it a summery look.

Bodysuit and Shorts, New Look.

I was really nervous about trying this bodysuit on but I was really happy with how it looked. It is very sexy which gave me a huge confidence boost. I think it would look better bra-less. This would be great for a night out. I would pair it with some high-waist denim shorts, like the ones I'm
wearing here (however, I did not buy these ones as I already own a pair that I practically live in.)

Shirt, Primark.

I have seen this style around a lot and I wish I had tried it out myself sooner. I really loved this, it was super comfy and would be perfect for the Autumn months that will soon be approaching. It was simple but stylish.

Top, River Island.

I rarely shop in River Island because they can be a bit pricey, but I really loved this top I found in there. I loved the off-shoulder style which makes you feel amazing. This was also super comfy to wear as it just flows and it looked very summery.

Playsuit, Topshop.

I tend to wear playsuits a lot in the summer and I loved this one from Topshop. I found it very flattering and I loved the off-shoulder style of it, which is different to the rest of my playsuits. I also thought the polka dots looked super cute.

Skirt and Crop Top, H&M.

I definitely own way too many skirts but I really loved the style of this one. It was very lightweight and cute and it would be perfect for a casual, summer day. I would pair this with converse and a small crop top, similar to the one I was wearing here.

Dress, H&M.

Okay, so I probably own too many dresses as well but I liked this one because it's a lot different to the rest I own due to it's bright colours. I really liked the colours on this dress because it looks very summery and I felt it made my skin tone glow. I loved how it fitted on me and felt it would make the perfect summer dress.

Fashion is what you make it and everyone should wear what they want and feel good about themselves no matter what their shape or size. Finding new clothes and trying new fashions really helped boost my self-confidence. It was a nice change up from the usual unflattering playsuit or high-waist shorts and plain crop top combo that I usually go for. A step out of my comfort zone was what I really needed.

You should learn to love yourself and be confident in your own skin. Although I still struggle with learning to love myself and accept myself for who I am, trying new styles for me was a step in the right direction. It gave me the confidence boost that I needed.

Until the next time,

Char.
