A Dog's Purpose: Why You MUST Read This Book!

By Char Shields - April 27, 2017

As a huge dog lover, I was instantly drawn to A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron when I saw the dog on the front cover. Yeah, yeah, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover but in this case, I'm very glad I did.

I was so excited to read this book and it did not disappoint. A Dog's Purpose is the most beautiful book I have ever read. It's an emotional roller-coaster. If you are a dog lover, then prepare for the tears you will shed and the anger you will feel. I had tears in my eyes by the end of the first chapter. A few chapters later, those tears were running down my face. But you will also laugh and you will feel an overwhelming sense of love.

The novel is written from a dog's point of view and you follow him as he continuously gets reborn as different dogs and tries to find his true purpose in life. The novel explores the different lives that real dogs live. From being homeless and living on the streets in fear with his siblings and mother, to a loving family pet and a hero working dog. He learns different lessons throughout these lives to help him achieve his purpose in life, as well as learning more about dogs and human nature.

It also explores the ways in which society treats dogs and raises important issues such as abuse, abandonment, the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars and the cruel environments some dogs have to live in. It really highlights how awful the world can be to dogs. But, it does also show how special the love and companionship between a human and a dog is. It's not about being their owner, it's about being their best friend.

The ending is just as beautiful as the rest of the book when he comes full circle with his past life. After what is a horrific start to his new life; he manages to find his owner, Ethan, from a previous life he had lived. The love is still strong between them, even as a different dog. The love the dog has for "his boy" Ethan, reminds me of the love between me and my dog.

It is a truly touching and emotional ending to the novel. The dog finally feels like he has fulfilled his purpose and realises just how much he has learnt from his previous lives. He is there for Ethan when he needs him the most and I was overwhelmed with the sense of love, "...everything had come down to this moment. I had fulfilled my purpose."

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, especially if you are a fellow dog owner. It's a beautiful and touching story that will definitely pull on your heart strings. There are also some important issues raised with the exploration of the different lives of real dogs and how they are viewed and treated by society. I will definitely be reading Cameron's other books as well as watching the film adaptation which is being released in UK cinemas on the 5th of May under the same title.
